dogs and kids whats the difference?

I am struggling a bit with our dog today here is why

Summer is in pain he has a sore hip... he has been struggling a bit this last year. He got bumped on his left side from a car on the highway 2 years ago. As of last nite he stopped walking on it and it is very painful for him to get up off the floor;.. so as I left the yard this morning there he was standing in the lane as usual to say goodbye and his left hind leg was tucked up under his hip...oh..i just wanted to turn around and stay home and give him "plenty of fluids", a tylenol and make a doctor's appointment. Instead I went on into town but I stopped at the vet's hoping someone would be there and made an appointment for Summer to be brought in. I have tried my healing touch technique on him as it usually helps him and stops the limp but he was pretty protective of that area last nite.... we will see what the vet says and try some dog pain killers and work from there....yup i am worried about him just like I would be with my own boys...
